It wasn’t just another weekend in Edmonton – it was a massive weekend of spring hockey.

We had the pleasure of welcoming 53 teams from Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Yukon to the 2017 AAA Spring Classic. From June 9 to 11, each team showcased their skills in an impressive battle for gold. After more than 130 games of top calibre hockey, eight teams were awarded with championship banners:

  • 2010: Team Alberta Black
  • 2009: Mountaineers
  • 2008: Team Alberta Black
  • 2007 (Red): Jr. Eagles
  • 2007 (Blue): Can West Outriders
  • 2006 (Red): Team Revolution
  • 2006 (Blue): Jr. Eagle Selects
  • 2005: Jr. Oil Kings Blue

“There was a lot of activity throughout the weekend and a very positive vibe,” shared Doug Nysetvold, founder and tournament organizer. “Teams were always coming and going, we had a photographer that offered team photos at the Terwillegar arena, and the kids really liked our MVP and championship medals.”

10.5 sheets of ice in Edmonton and Leduc were used to host the tournament and provide each team with five 20-20-20 stop-time games. Overtime was also available throughout the tournament, which is a feature most Canadian spring tournaments of this size don’t offer.

The first and second place winners walked away with a giant team banner and oversized medals. Every participant also received a mini banner as a tournament souvenir and thank you gift.

“People really enjoyed it,” Nysetvold stated. “There were a few glitches as you can expect, but we kept on schedule and I saw a lot of happy faces.”

Of course, a tournament of this scale wouldn’t be possible without the help of sponsors. We’d like to recognize and thank the following organizations for their contributions:
